" Hot on the Trail of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker"

Saturday, Sept. 24 th, 2005 - 2:00 pm

Tim Gallagher had been traveling across the South, interviewing people who claimed to have seen Ivory-billed Woodpeckers and following up on their sightings. Who could have predicted that on one of these trips down a remote bayou in eastern Arkansas , he would have a close-up, unmistakable view of this most sought after of birds? Tim will tell the story of the ivory-bill's near demise and miraculous resurrection and discuss The Grail Bird, his new book on the rediscovery . A book signing will follow!

Tim Gallagher, an award-winning author, and wildlife photographer, is currently editor-in-chief of Living Bird, the flagship publication of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Tim's lifelong interest in wilderness exploration has taken him twice to Greenland, where he made an open-boat voyage up the coast to study nesting seabirds and falcons, and to the hinterlands of Iceland , where he climbed lofty cliffs to learn more about the spectacular gyrfalcon, the world's largest falcon.

"The Great Outdoors " A Quilt Show Celebrating Nature

Where can you find stars, sunsets, trees and trout? At a Quilt Show of course! On Saturday, March 31, 2007 , Morgan Outdoors will celebrate "The Great Outdoors - Quilts Celebrating Nature”. Opening Reception from 1-3 PM . Come and meet the quilt artists and see the world through their eyes. "The Great Outdoors - Quilts Celebrating Nature" will be on display from March 31-April 15..

Part of Morgan Outdoors' goal is to introduce people to activities that bring them closer to nature. Hiking, birding and snowshoeing are examples. It's fun to look behind the scenes and find out what inspires people," said owner Lisa Lyons. "Though I never learned to quilt, I've always admired the artistic and sewing skill of friends who do." This unique show, curated by local quilter Kathy Bryant, showcases quilts created from nature's inspiration.

There will be one invitational quilt and nine pieces from local quilters. Each quilter wrote a personal statement describing the inspiration for their work, which includes fishing scenes, landscapes, and starry nights. Visiting quilter and angler Susan Balch (to left of her quilt in photo) found her inspiration from "one of my favorite fishing spots on the Salmon River in New York and the many species of trout, salmon, and steelhead that come into the river in the fall to remain through the spring."

Local Screening of Who Killed the Electric Car

Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 7:00pm

A free screening of the 2006 documentary film "Who Killed the Electric Car". Hosted by Adrianne Picciano of Dirt Diva Gardening and Lisa Lyons of Morgan Outdoors. The film looks at the hopeful birth and untimely death of the EV1 electric car launched in 1996 by General Motors. It was the first modern-day commercially available electric car. The EV1 required no fuel and could be plugged in for recharging at home and at a number of so-called battery parks. Many of the people who leased the car said the car drove like a dream.

With all the elements of a murder mystery, the film's director Chris Paine says "it is about why the only kind of cars that we can drive run on oil." Suggested for ages 12 and up. Film length is 92 minutes.

Lightweight Backpacking

Starting out or Changing your ways with Karl and Christopher Beard.

Saturday, August 6, 2005 4:00- 5:00pm
Join the father-son team of Karl and Christopher Beard for a look at some intriguing ways to lighten your load while increasing your fun and even saving money. It may involve simply choosing the "right stuff," sewing your own equipment, or making high-performance stoves from soda or cat food cans. These two also choose to sleep in low-impact jungle hammocks. Karl has reduced his pack weight from 50+ pounds to just 27, including a 2-lb bear can. This program is perfect for problem-solvers and dreamers of all ages – so bring the kids!

A native of the Shawangunks and Catskills, Karl Beard has been the New York Director of the National Park Service - Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program for 17 years. Before parenthood, Karl was an avid backpacker, mountaineer and equipment tinkerer - - from the canvas packs and pup tents of the ‘60s through the nylon revolution. Christopher, 10, is a new arrival on the backpacking scene and already developing his own "gear sense" and design ideas. Karl and family live in Kingston, NY.
